Easier CSV imports, smarter categories, and a transactions page you can search

Bank files with larger amounts now import without a hitch, your phone bill is no longer filed under fuel, and you can search and filter your transactions in the app.

This week we imported a realistic bank file into a brand-new account and fixed everything that looked wrong. Here is what you will notice.

Importing a CSV

  • Larger amounts just work. Files with amounts written like 1,250.00 used to fail to import. They import now, along with the other ways banks write numbers, such as (500.00) for a charge or $1,250.00. If a number is genuinely ambiguous, Sheetful tells you which row rather than guessing.
  • Chase, US Bank, and TD Bank files map themselves. For files from those banks, the suggested column mapping used to get the description column wrong. It is right now.
  • A starter file you can fill in. The import page offers a small CSV with the right columns and a few example rows, shows what each supported bank's file looks like, and says plainly how amounts should be written: spending negative, income positive.
  • Your own categories count. If your file has a category column, Sheetful uses it whenever it does not have a better answer of its own.

Categories

  • Fewer wrong guesses. A T-Mobile bill was being filed under fuel, and a transfer to your savings account under bank fees. Both are fixed, and so is the underlying cause, so similar mix-ups should not appear elsewhere.
  • More merchants recognised. Rent, electricity and utilities, insurance, internet, car rental, Amazon purchases and refunds, and AI subscriptions now get a category on their own.
  • Tidier names. PG&E stays PG&E, The Melt keeps its capital letter, masked account numbers like XXXXXX4412 are dropped, and a bank label such as Merchant Name: Mercury Checking shows up in your spreadsheet as Mercury Checking.

In the app

  • Search and filters on the transactions page. Search by merchant, filter by category, or narrow to a date range.
  • The navigation stays put. Scrolling a long list no longer takes the sidebar and column headings with it, and the sidebar can collapse to icons when you want more room.
  • Dates say which timezone they mean. Your trial or renewal date shows the same moment in the app and in the email you receive before a charge, each with its timezone named, so the two can no longer look like different days.
  • Spreadsheet dates fix themselves. If a date column in your sheet ever showed plain numbers instead of dates, it is repaired on the next sync.

Earlier this week

  • Importing a CSV works again after a bug that could fail the final step.
  • The footer in the app now has the full set of links: contact, feedback, status, security, privacy, terms, cookie preferences, FAQ, and updates.
  • The subscription page no longer shows an upgrade offer to someone who is already subscribed if it briefly cannot load your plan.
  • Rebuild is switched off, with an explanation, when there is nothing to rebuild from yet.
  • Choosing a spreadsheet shows the file's name rather than an internal code.
