Sheetful is live

Sheetful is open to everyone. Connect a bank, pick a template, and your transactions land in a Google Sheet or Excel workbook you own. Here is what it does today, and what it does not do yet.

Sheetful is open at sheetful.io. This post is the whole picture: what the product does today, what it does not do yet, and what each plan includes.

The August post was written before signup opened. It stays up as a snapshot of that date; this one replaces it.

What Sheetful does

Sheetful connects your bank and credit-card accounts through Plaid and writes those transactions into a Google Sheet or a Microsoft Excel workbook on OneDrive that lives in your own account.

  • The bank connection is read-only. Sheetful reads transaction history. It cannot move money, change account settings, or do anything else at your bank.
  • The spreadsheet is yours. Share it, edit it, build your own formulas and pivots on top of it, or disconnect Sheetful and keep every row already written.
  • Plaid typically returns about 90 days of history when you first connect, then Sheetful syncs forward from there. Pending charges are not written; a row appears once your bank posts the transaction, which is later than when the charge first shows up in your banking app.
  • We also keep a copy of your transactions to power the dashboard, export, categories, and duplicate detection. Your Plaid and spreadsheet tokens are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM; the security page says what we store and what we do not.

What is in the app

Seven templates. Monthly Budget (50/30/20), Spending Tracker, Debt Payoff Planner, Expense Analysis, Cash Flow Forecasting, Smart Transaction Monitoring, and a Business Expense Tracker (Schedule C). Full list with previews on /templates.

Categories on synced rows. Merchant names are cleaned up and each row gets a plain category from 200+ built-in merchant rules. On Premium you can edit a transaction's category, tags, and notes in the app.

Your own spreadsheet, on Premium. Instead of a Sheetful template you can link a Google Sheet you already own, or an Excel workbook you already have, and Sheetful writes transaction rows into a tab you name. The FAQ spells out the rules for that, including what happens to a tab that already has its own header row.

Google Sheets, Excel, or both. Destinations are not a paid feature. The free tier's one-file limit is counted across destinations, not per destination; Premium can keep several template files live at once and every sync writes to all of them.

Sync Now. A manual sync from the dashboard or the banks page, on every tier.

Automatic daily sync, on Premium.

Update sheet. When we ship an improvement to a template you are using, the dashboard offers to update that file. It refreshes layout, formulas, and category mapping without re-downloading your bank history, and it keeps the category cells you edited.

Rebuild from bank data. The last-resort option under Settings, for when a file looks wrong after a fix. It re-reads your connected banks, then clears and rewrites one named file, and it says plainly what it will reset before you confirm.

Emails when something needs you. A welcome message at signup, and a heads-up when a bank connection needs reauthorizing, so you usually hear from us before you notice a gap in the sheet. Other sync failures are recorded in Sync logs, and some of them are emailed as well.

CSV import. Bring in older history from the export files of several major US banks, for the months your bank connection does not provide on its own.

CSV export. Export everything from Settings, any time, on any tier.

Sync logs. Every sync attempt with its outcome and error message, under Settings, so a failed sync is something you can read rather than guess at.

Transactions list in the dashboard, with your synced rows and their categories.

Status page for our own service health and recent sync results, plus links to Plaid, Google, Microsoft, and Stripe status.

Tiers

  • Free: one bank connection, one template file, sync when you click Sync Now. Forever free, no card. Google Sheets, Excel, or both: the one-file limit is counted across the two, not per destination.
  • Premium: unlimited bank connections, automatic daily sync, all seven templates with several files live at once, transaction editing in the app, and linking a spreadsheet you already own. New Premium subscriptions include a 14-day trial, once per customer, and a payment method is required at checkout.
  • Founders: the same Premium product at an introductory annual price, capped at the first 1,000 paid subscribers or the end of the launch window, whichever comes first. /pricing shows whether it is still open.

Numbers, trial terms, and the fine print live on /pricing.

Known limits

We would rather write these down than have you find them.

  • Custom categorization rules are not live. You get the 200+ built-in rules, and on Premium you can change a row's category in the app. Rules you define yourself are still on the roadmap.
  • Category edits you make in the spreadsheet itself are not read back into Sheetful. A normal sync only adds new rows, so a hand edit on a row that is already there stays put. A Rebuild is the exception: it rewrites that file from our copy and will reset the edit, and the app says so before you confirm. Edits you want Sheetful to remember belong in the transactions list, on Premium.
  • Excel gets the same transactions and the same tab structure; the richer charts and color rules are on Google Sheets today. We spell the differences out on /vs/tiller rather than claiming parity we do not have.
  • The Excel permission prompt is broader than Google's. Microsoft Graph has no "only files this app created" scope that works for personal OneDrive workbooks, so connecting Excel asks for Files.ReadWrite. We use it for the workbooks you connect and nothing else; the FAQ covers revoking it.
  • Pending transactions are not synced, and history older than what your bank connection provides when you first connect is not filled in automatically. CSV import is the way to bring that in.
  • US bank connections only, and prices are in USD.
  • No investment or portfolio tracking. That is deliberately not this product.
  • Sheetful is a web app. It works on phones and tablets in the browser; there is no separate native app.

Since the August post

  • Microsoft publisher verification completed, so the Excel connection shows a verified publisher.
  • A long pass of copy, accessibility, and reliability fixes across the app and this site ahead of opening signup.

Everything the August post listed is still here. This is Sheetful on launch day. New posts appear here about once a week, whenever there is something you would notice.
